A website can look professional, have strong services and useful content, yet still struggle to appear in Google. Often, the problem is not the offer. It is the technical foundation underneath it. This technical SEO audit guide explains how to find the issues that stop search engines crawling, understanding and ranking your site – without drowning you in jargon.
For a small business, the point of an audit is not to create a 70-page spreadsheet nobody acts on. It is to identify what is costing you visibility, enquiries and sales, then deal with it in the right order.
What a technical SEO audit actually checks
Technical SEO is the behind-the-scenes work that helps search engines access and interpret your website. It covers areas such as page speed, mobile usability, broken links, duplicate pages, indexing, website structure and security.
Think of it as checking the building before spending more money on signage. Publishing great content or running paid campaigns can bring people to your website, but technical issues can make that traffic harder to win and easier to lose.
Not every warning in an SEO tool deserves immediate attention. A handful of redirected URLs, for example, is often perfectly normal. A page blocked from Google that should be bringing in leads is not. A worthwhile audit separates genuine business problems from harmless technical noise.
Start with indexing and crawlability
Before worrying about rankings, establish whether Google can find and include your important pages in its search results. If a service page is not indexed, improving its copy will not solve the problem.
Check which pages appear in Google
Search for your domain in Google using a site search, such as `site:yourdomain.co.uk`. This gives a rough view of the pages Google has discovered. Compare the results with the pages you expect to see: core services, location pages, key case studies and useful resources.
Google Search Console provides a clearer picture. Its indexing reports can show pages that have been excluded, crawled but not indexed, or discovered but not crawled. The wording can sound alarming, but the question is straightforward: are your important pages indexed, and are the excluded pages intentionally excluded?
Thank-you pages, internal search results, test pages and old campaign pages may not need to appear in search. Your main service pages almost certainly do.
Review robots.txt, noindex tags and canonical tags
Three settings regularly cause accidental visibility problems. Your robots.txt file gives crawlers instructions about what they can access. A noindex tag tells search engines not to include a page in results. A canonical tag signals which version of a page should be treated as the main one.
Used properly, these are helpful controls. Used carelessly, they can hide valuable pages or point Google towards the wrong URL. This can happen after a website rebuild, a staging site launch or a plugin update.
Check that live pages are not carrying a noindex instruction. Confirm that canonical tags point to the correct live URL, particularly where you have similar service pages, product filters or pages available with tracking parameters.
Make the site easy to navigate for people and search engines
A clear website structure helps visitors find what they need quickly. It also helps Google understand which pages matter and how they relate to one another.
Your most valuable pages should not be buried several clicks deep behind vague menu labels. A visitor looking for web design, SEO management or a specific local service should be able to reach the relevant page from a logical menu path. If they cannot, search engines may also treat that page as less important.
Check internal links and orphan pages
Internal links are links between pages on your own website. They guide users through the site and pass context and authority to important pages. A good internal link is useful in the sentence where it appears. It should not exist simply because an SEO checklist says every page needs more links.
Look for orphan pages – pages with no internal links pointing to them. These can be hard for users and crawlers to find. Some are deliberate, such as a private campaign landing page. Others are forgotten service pages that could still have commercial value.
Also review your anchor text. “Find out more” is fine occasionally, but descriptive links such as “SEO management services” make the destination clearer for everyone.
Find broken links and redirect chains
Broken internal links lead to dead ends, typically a 404 error page. They create frustration and waste crawl effort, especially when they appear in menus, footer links or prominent buttons.
Redirects are not automatically bad. When an old page has moved permanently, a single 301 redirect is usually the right solution. Problems arise when URLs pass through several redirects before reaching the final page, or when they loop back on themselves. Clean these up where possible, particularly after a redesign or domain migration.
Test mobile usability and page experience
Most business websites receive a large share of traffic from mobile devices. A site that looks fine on a widescreen monitor can be frustrating on a phone: text may be too small, buttons too close together, forms too long or key information hidden behind awkward menus.
Review your highest-value pages on real mobile devices, not just a browser preview. Can someone call you, request a quote, understand your service and complete a form without pinching, zooming or fighting the layout? This is where technical SEO meets conversion rate.
Focus on the pages that generate leads
Speed matters, but it should be judged in context. A slightly heavier homepage with properly compressed images may be acceptable if it clearly explains your offer and converts visitors. A slow contact page that loses form submissions is a more urgent issue.
Common causes of slow pages include oversized images, unnecessary scripts, poorly configured caching, excessive plugins and third-party tracking tools. Do not remove useful functionality blindly. Measure what each element adds to the customer journey, then decide whether its value justifies the load time.
Google’s Core Web Vitals are useful indicators here. They assess loading speed, visual stability and responsiveness. Treat poor scores as a prompt to investigate rather than a reason to chase perfect numbers at the expense of a practical website.
Check for duplicate, thin and outdated pages
Search engines need a clear answer to a simple question: which page is the best result for this topic? Duplicate or near-duplicate pages make that harder.
This is common on sites with separate pages for very similar locations or services, copied manufacturer descriptions, tag archives, old blog posts or multiple URL versions. It can also happen when both the www and non-www versions of a site work, or when HTTP and HTTPS pages are accessible separately.
Choose one preferred domain version and make sure alternatives redirect correctly. Then review pages that target the same intent. Two genuinely different services may need separate pages. Two pages saying almost exactly the same thing should usually be consolidated, redirected or substantially improved.
Thin content is not simply short content. A concise page can be excellent if it answers a focused question. The concern is a page with little original value, no clear purpose and no reason for someone to choose it over another result.
Review structured data, security and error handling
Structured data is code that helps search engines understand details on a page, such as your business name, services, reviews, FAQs or local information. It does not guarantee richer search results or higher rankings, despite what some agencies imply. It can, however, reduce ambiguity and support accurate presentation in search.
Check that any structured data matches what visitors can actually see. Incorrect review ratings, outdated business details and misleading schema can create more problems than benefits.
Your website should also use HTTPS across every page. Browsers flag unsecured forms, and customers are less likely to submit their details when a site appears unsafe. Check for mixed content too, where an HTTPS page still loads images or scripts through an insecure connection.
Finally, test your error pages. A 404 page should explain that the requested page is unavailable and offer a sensible route back to useful content. It should not leave a potential customer staring at a blank technical message.
Put fixes in business order
The biggest mistake in a technical audit is treating every issue as equal. Start with faults that prevent key pages from being indexed, break the user journey or stop people converting. Then address widespread issues such as slow templates, poor mobile layouts and confusing internal navigation. Small metadata warnings and isolated tidy-up tasks can come later.
A practical priority list might include fixing a noindex tag on a core service page, repairing a broken enquiry form, redirecting old URLs after a rebuild, compressing oversized homepage images and improving weak internal links to valuable pages. The right order depends on your site, traffic and commercial goals.
Keep a record of what changed, when it changed and why. Technical SEO works best as regular maintenance, especially after adding new pages, changing platforms or installing new plugins. A clear, well-maintained website gives your marketing a fair chance to do its job – and gives potential customers fewer reasons to leave before they get in touch.
